As the last ice age drew to a close a Paleolithic glacier carved out an alpine region that today contains the largest lake in Italy – Lake Garda.
Lying in the north of the country, conveniently located between Brescia, Verona, Venice and Milan it is an easily accessible, world famous destination for travelers wishing to take a holiday in Italy.
Lake Garda features 158 km of shore dotted with villages, castles and promenades, as well as a string of small little islands and five large islands inside the lake. - Lake Garda is fed by the Sarca River and finally flows into the Mincio River
- The lake is home to the Critically Endangered Carpiù species of salmonid
- The Battle of Solferino on the shores of this lake led to the Geneva convention and the formation of the Red Cross
- Benito Mussolini reigned over his Italian Social Republic from a villa in the elegant town of Salò during World War II
- Gustave Klimt‘s 1913 painting of Malcesine on Lake Garda was inspired by the beauty of the area and Goethe also raved about this location
- Sirmione, located on the south of the lake is an ancient fortified town that features the 13th century Scaliger castle, healing sulfur springs as well as Gardaland – one of the most famous theme parks in Italy. The famous Roman poet Catallus (rumoured to be the inventor of romantic poetry) also lived in Sirmione
- Lake Garda is the birthplace of the violin – developed by Gasparo De Salo
